Press release no. 2 21
On Friday, May 29, 2026, at 6:30 PM, the Chamber of Commerce Auditorium in Piazza Libertà will host the presentation of the publication edited by the National Association of Historic-Artistic Centers (ANCSA), entitled "Ragusa: a process of urban, social and cultural regeneration."
The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Ragusa through the Department of the Historic Center in close collaboration with ANCSA, is part of the program of preliminary events leading up to the General Assembly on Historic Centers and Cities, scheduled for November in Bologna.
The volume offers a profound reflection on the urban transformations of the Iblean city, relating them to the territorial and landscape contexts and the global challenges of contemporary times. The primary objective is to provide concrete and innovative tools for addressing the historical understanding of the built heritage, urban design, and strategic planning of the historic center, the beating heart of Ragusa's identity.
" The publication we will present," states Giovanni Gurrieri, Councilor for the Historic Center, "offers fundamental insights into the transformations that have affected Ragusa in relation to its landscape contexts and contemporary challenges. We intend to provide useful tools for addressing crucial issues such as historical knowledge of the built heritage, urban planning, and the planning of our historic center, a fundamental element of the city's identity. In this process, the participatory approach, which sees citizens and the administration working side by side, is undoubtedly the best tool for jointly navigating the path of change and a renewed shared awareness. For this reason, all citizens are invited to participate."
The meeting will be chaired by Marika Fior (ANCSA Secretary General and professor at Sapienza University of Rome), who will frame the volume as a fundamental scientific step towards the Bologna General States.
After official greetings from Mayor Giuseppe Cassì and Councilor Giovanni Gurrieri, the proceedings will get underway with the volume's editors, Stefano Storchi (president of ANCSA and professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan and the University of Parma) and Letizia Carrera (sociologist at the University of Bari), who will illustrate the research's methodology and narrative.
This will be followed by thematic reflections entrusted to illustrious experts in the field: Massimo Carmassi (architect and restorer) on the theme of urban planning in the wake of history; Caterina Carocci (University of Catania) on the delicate combination of heritage conservation and seismic risk; Silvia Viviani (architect and Councillor for Urban Planning of Livorno) on land management tools and master plans.
The final remarks will be presented by Chiara Nifosì (architect at the Polytechnic University of Milan), focusing on the transition from theoretical research to contemporary design practice.
Citizens are invited to participate.
